How we're getting on

Creating sustainable solutions to poverty across Africa

Since 2010 The Africa Trust have strived to deliver sustainable solutions to poverty across Africa.

We focus on two key projects. The first is sustainable water provision through the award winning elephant pump. This pump was developed by our co-founder Ian Thorpe in 2006. The technology behind the pump enables villages to maintain its operation by using locally available materials which prevents costly repairs. Over 95% of pumps originally installed are still in operation today thanks to the design and materials used.

The second project we are very excited to expand is Business Skills Training. The concept is simple. We offer free business training to rural communities across Malawi, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Recipients of the training are invited to submit a business plan for micro finance loans. Each business costs between £50 – £100 to fund. We offer the finance with zero interest and the business owner is expected to repay the loan within 12 months so we can use the money to expand the program. Today, over 16,000 businesses have been launched. Of the money funded over 98% has been repaid. We believe we are driving the future of poverty alleviation and we welcome people to join us on this exciting journey.
